Albania Enters the Era of Digital Banking with Jet Bank

The global shift toward digital finance has been reshaping banking systems for more than twenty years. Across Europe, institutions such as Revolut, N26, and Monzo have demonstrated that banking without physical branches is not only viable, it is increasingly preferred. Albania has now taken its own step into this era, with Jet Bank becoming the country’s first fully digital bank.

The milestone was made official on 25 March 2026, when Jet Bank received its full banking license from the Bank of Albania, clearing the way for it to operate at full capacity in the local market. The licensing process was thorough and comprehensive, covering governance, risk management, security, operational readiness, financial soundness, and transparency. CEO Fatbardha Rino confirmed that the institution also passed rigorous compliance assessments carried out by nine local and international bodies, which included detailed due diligence into the bank’s capital structure and the professional qualifications of its investors.

Jet Bank in the Albanian Market

This outcome confirms that Jet Bank’s entry into the Albanian market is backed by the same regulatory rigor applied to any licensed financial institution. It also marks a defining moment for a country whose banking sector has long depended on physical branch infrastructure and in-person service models.

At the heart of this transformation is CEO Fatbardha Rino, whose 24 years of national and international banking experience have shaped both the vision and the structure of the institution. In her interview on Top Channel’s Top Story, Rino described Jet Bank’s model as built on three principles: convenience, transparency, and technology, and explained why these principles are particularly relevant to an Albanian market where a significant portion of the population remains underbanked or reliant on cash.

The early public response to Jet Bank reinforced just how ready the market was. More than 40,000 Albanians registered on the bank’s waitlist within the first few days of its launch, demonstrating a level of appetite for modern financial services that traditional banking has not fully met. Prof. Dr. Adrian Civici, Economist and University Professor, has framed Jet Bank’s arrival as part of a structural shift in which digital infrastructure replaces physical branches as the primary vehicle for delivering financial services.

International media took notice as well

Deutsche Welle highlighted Jet Bank as a potential model for the wider Western Balkans region, noting that while traditional banks are investing in digital tools, Jet Bank is distinct in being built entirely as a mobile-native institution with no branch network at all. Retail Executive Director Belma Lushi confirmed the bank’s licensing milestone and the simultaneous opening of its public waitlist, marking the start of its customer-facing journey.

As Albania progresses toward European integration, institutions like Jet Bank contribute to the broader alignment of the country’s financial sector with European digital standards. The bank’s leadership has already engaged with European Commission officials on this theme, reinforcing the view that Jet Bank is not simply a domestic banking product; it is part of a wider story about where Albania is headed.
